The many layers of Pieta | Posing
If you've been following me on Facebook you will have noticed many Behind-The-Scenes (BTS) photos especially of late. You may have also noticed that my number one assistant | partner-in-crime has been dubbed Pieta's Director of Posing. :) Ahna herself has modeled in the past and she, along with myself, continues to study posing.
Ahna & I seem to have a knack for knowing what the other is thinking which is fabulous on a shoot & which makes us such a great team. During a shoot Ahna will often start guiding our clients into flattering poses whether they are soft & feminine or more high-fashion Vogue. While Ahna is working with the client, I am figuring out which angle is key to that particular image to best capture the story we are trying to tell. The client then will often hear me verbally cueing them for head positioning, eyes & mouth (e.g. smile, no smile, deep breath in / out & relax). We put the same amount of work into each pose & occasionally the client gets a good laugh watching us do ridiculous happy dances (or me attempting to fall over while climbing up to a higher suface and Ahna jumping to save me)....
I wanted to blog on this as I've often heard many people say, "Well, I don't look as beautiful as the girls you photograph" or "I'm not skinny enough" or "I don't know how to pose... I'm so awkward in front of the camera"... In all honesty, it's all about the posing. Sooo... Have no fear!! Ahna (and I) are here! :) But in all seriousness, we guide you through each pose every step of the way to make you look amazing! ... and we may recommend stretching before & after your photo session, because sometimes you rediscover muscles you forgot you had! I know I do! :)
Here are a few images straight off the camera of Ahna coaching our Pieta Rep Savanna in two poses during a recent Fairytale photoshoot. Also pictured are the final fully edited images that will be presented to Savanna & her mother; only colors & lighting were enhanced during editing. Lastly, there is a before photo of Savanna sans makeup, hair, & wardrobe. We took her from girl-next-door to "Belle" of Beauty & the Beast. :)

This title really got me thinking about a photography class I took years ago. We were working on capturing emotional depth in portraits, and our instructor kept bringing us back to the idea of layers – not just physical ones like clothing, but emotional and psychological layers. We spent an entire session dissecting a single photograph, trying to understand what the subject was conveying beyond just their expression https://www.afp.gov.au/crimes/cybercrime It made me realize how much goes into a seemingly simple pose. Seeing "Pieta" and "Posing" together in your title immediately brought that memory back. It’s amazing how an artist can imbue stillness with so much narrative and feeling, isn’t it?
